Volunteer FAQ

Who can volunteer at TOA?
If you’re over 18 and have a good level of English you’ll be just fine. Some roles do require German skills however, so check before you apply for a role. Other than that all we really want from a volunteer is someone who can perform their task, maintain a professional and friendly demeanour throughout the festival, and turn up on time.

Can TOA cover my costs?
Unfortunately not. We can’t reimburse any flight or accommodation costs you accrue volunteering for us at Tech Open Air. However, we’ve got your ticket & meals covered.

Do I need to purchase a ticket?
No. You will be free to enjoy everything else that TOA16 offers based on completion of your assigned shifts. However, if you fail to complete, arrive late or leave early for any of your volunteer shifts, you will no longer be entitled to attend the rest of TOA16.

Will I receive training before my first shift?
We will provide volunteers with a briefing to run through the TOA16 Volunteer Program, the volunteer roles and answer any questions. Date and location are to be confirmed.

How many shifts do I have to complete?
Volunteers will complete 2-3 shifts throughout the event. Shift lengths vary depending on volunteer role, but are typically between three and four hours long. While TOA16 takes place on July 13, 14, 15 there are also volunteer shifts available before and after the festival (details need to be discussed with the volunteer team). Morning shifts begin at 8am, while afternoon shifts begin at 1pm. Please note that these times may vary.

When do applications close?
Volunteer positions are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that registering does not guarantee your volunteer position.

Can Tech Open Air sponsor my visa application?
We can’t get directly involved with your respective embassy, but we can supply a document confirming your involvement with TOA that would support your application.

About Us

In 2012 a bunch of Berlin startup folks came together to create a new kind of Festival, bound by the desire to build a bridge between the tech, music, art and science worlds.

From the onset we wished for it to become a collaborative e ort by the community. Together with you we crafted the initial format via open town hall meetups, got our logo crowdsourced and became the world's first crowdfunded festival. Rather than moulding people and ideas into one format, we seek to provide a platform for others to build upon.

Technology is a transformative power that disrupts entire industries and touches every angle of life. By bringing together technological changemakers with representatives of di erent disciplines, we help the disrupted better anticipate the future and the technologists better understand the world they change.

We only came this far thanks to the energy of our speakers, artists, satellite event organisers, supporters, volunteers and attendees. It really means the world to us that people from across different disciplines have invested so much time to pass on their knowledge and passion to others.
